United Way of the Southern Alleghenies
The United Way of the Southern Alleghenies Glass Slipper Project had a successful spring.
During a series of "shopping nights," 187 participants were provided with a gown, helping them to enjoy a memorable prom evening. The gowns and formal wear are donated each year for the program, sponsored by Reliance Bank.
Shopping nights were held at a vacant store at the Logan Valley Mall. The event is accomplished with the help of 22 volunteers, providing more than 120 volunteer hours. In total, $56,100 worth of gowns were provided.
“Glass Slipper helps to make prom more attainable as the cost of gowns, accessories, and shoes add up quickly. We believe every young woman deserves to feel beautiful and share in the festivities," United Way President and CEO Karen Struble Myers said.
New this year, United Way partnered with Night to Shine, giving participants of that event a formal gown. Night to Shine provides a prom-like experience to adults with intellectual disabilities.
